What documents do you need for the Illinois real estate exam?
For the standard Illinois broker route, prepare your course certificate for PSI eligibility and one acceptable government-issued ID for exam day. Check the name on your booking before you test. Attorney and endorsement candidates follow different education-document instructions.

Set aside the ID you will actually use, then compare it with your appointment confirmation. Keep the education and application records in a separate folder so you can find a requested document without searching through old emails.

What do you prepare before booking?

The attorney route requires admission to practice by the Illinois Supreme Court. The absence of a pre-booking upload does not decide whether someone qualifies for that route.
For endorsement, IDFPR's application instructions, revised July 2025 specify a transcript and licensing-agency certification or license history from each state where you are licensed. These are license-application records. Follow PSI's instructions for what to upload before testing.
A wording issue in the booklet
Under the Broker Endorsement heading, the next sentence uses the managing-broker title. IDFPR's application distinguishes the two professions. Follow IDFPR's instructions for your profession and ask PSI to confirm the exam route if the account labels differ.
Before uploading a certificate, check the candidate name, course information and completion record. Use a complete, readable file and save a copy. Check the upload screen for its current file-size and format requirements. Ask PSI if an instruction is missing or the review is still pending. See the registration guide for the broader process.
What identification do you need on exam day?
PSI lists one valid, unexpired ID with a photograph and signature. The first and last name must exactly match the booking. Listed examples include state driver's licenses or IDs, U.S. or foreign passports, foreign government IDs and U.S. alien registration cards.
- Temporary state driver's licenses or IDs are listed, but still have to meet the document conditions.
- U.S. military ID is listed for test-center admission and is excluded for remote testing.
Check the actual temporary document for the required features. Ask PSI about a missing photograph, signature or unusual format before relying on it. Another program's PSI checklist may have different rules. Use the Illinois booklet and your appointment instructions together, and resolve any discrepancy with PSI.

What should you do when a document does not match?

PSI says improper identification prevents testing as scheduled and forfeits the exam fee. Contact PSI Test Taker Support before the appointment if the records do not agree. Keep the reply and verify that any requested correction appears in your booking.
Example: the booking uses a former surname
Ana booked as Ana Lopez, but her current ID says Ana Rivera. A course certificate in the former name does not resolve the booking mismatch. Ana should ask PSI which correction and supporting records it requires before the appointment. She should not rely on bringing a marriage certificate to check-in without PSI's direction.
A useful question is: “I am booked for the Illinois broker exam on [date] by [test center or remote]. My booking and ID differ in [describe the issue]. What correction or supporting record is required, and how can I confirm it is complete?”
Which records should you keep after the exam?
- Your education certificate or transcript and any corrected version.
- PSI approval, appointment and payment confirmations.
- The score report and instructions supplied with it.
- IDFPR submissions, receipts, requests and your responses.
Keep an unchanged copy of each submission so you can identify what was sent and when. If a file is corrected, retain both versions with clear names. This is an organization suggestion, not a legal record-retention schedule.
Within one year after receiving a passing exam score, the published rule requires both submitting an application and meeting all licensing requirements. Do I have to upload my high school diploma to PSI?
A diploma or equivalent is a standard broker eligibility condition. The booklet's scheduling instructions call for the course certificate; they do not direct every standard candidate to upload a diploma at that step. Follow any additional request made for your record.
Must I bring a printed course certificate to the test center?
The booklet uses the course certificate for eligibility before scheduling and lists identification for admission. It does not state a universal paper-certificate requirement at check-in. Keep your certificate and approval accessible, and read your appointment instructions for any additional direction.
Can I show a photograph or screenshot of my ID?
Do not assume a photograph, photocopy or phone image will be accepted. Prepare the listed government-issued document and ask PSI about an unusual document format before booking or testing. This guide does not verify digital-wallet acceptance.
