PSI identification rules

Illinois real estate exam identification requirements

PSI requires one current, valid, unexpired government-issued ID with your photograph and signature. The first and last name must match the scheduled name. An expired document, name mismatch, unacceptable ID, or remote military ID can stop the exam and forfeit the fee.

What identification does PSI require?

Short answer: Bring one listed government-issued ID. It must be current, valid, unexpired, signed, and include your photograph. Its first and last name must match the PSI booking.

Every listed document still has to satisfy the current validity, photograph, signature, and name-matching rules. A document type appearing in the table does not excuse an expired date or booking mismatch.

How do test-center and remote ID rules differ?

The main ID-specific difference stated in the current booklet is military identification. A U.S. government-issued military ID is listed for test-center admission but is not allowed for remote testing.

Remote candidates also have to present the ID through the proctored check-in process. Use a document you can display clearly on camera while following the proctor's instructions. Do not send an identity document to a general email address or upload it outside the official PSI process.

The remote versus test-center guide compares technology, room setup, paper, calculators, breaks, and candidate fit.

Can you use a temporary state ID?

Yes, when it is a temporary state-issued driver's license or identification card that satisfies PSI's current conditions. Check that it is valid and unexpired and contains the required photograph and signature.

Temporary formats vary. If your document does not visibly contain every required element, ask PSI before the appointment rather than relying on an assumption at check-in.

How exact does the name match need to be?

PSI requires the first and last name on the identification to match the name used to schedule. Compare the actual characters rather than deciding the names are close enough.

A course certificate, marriage document, court order, appointment email, or explanation to the proctor should not be treated as an automatic substitute for a corrected booking and acceptable ID. Follow PSI's direction for the mismatch.

Which IDs should you not rely on?

Unless PSI expressly confirms otherwise for your appointment, do not rely on:

  • An expired document.
  • A document without a photograph.
  • A document without a signature.
  • An employee, school, membership, or library card.
  • A course certificate or PSI appointment email.
  • A photocopy, scan, screenshot, or photo of the document.
  • A military ID for remote testing.
  • A document whose name does not match the booking.

Some of these items may prove something in another context. They are not the government-issued photo-and-signature identification required for exam admission.

What happens if the ID is unacceptable?

PSI says failure to present proper identification invalidates the registration. You cannot test as scheduled, and the examination fee is forfeited.

The current broker exam fee is $58 and is nonrefundable and nontransferable. The financial loss matters, but the larger loss can be a delayed test date, disrupted study plan, or pressure on an eligibility window.

Use the Illinois exam cost and fee-risk guide to prevent other avoidable forfeitures.

When should you contact PSI?

Contact PSI before exam day when:

  • The account or confirmation name differs from the ID.
  • Your ID will expire before the appointment.
  • Your legal name changed.
  • The temporary ID lacks a required element.
  • You need to use an unusual government-issued document.
  • You booked remote testing but planned to use military ID.
  • You are unsure whether the document format is acceptable.

Save PSI's response and any corrected confirmation. Do not create a second account or switch document details without official direction.

Run the final ID check the night before

  1. Open the PSI appointment confirmation.
  2. Compare its first and last name with the ID.
  3. Check the ID expiration date.
  4. Confirm the photograph and signature are present.
  5. Confirm the ID type appears on the current PSI list.
  6. For remote testing, confirm the document is not military ID.
  7. Place the ID where it cannot be forgotten.

Then use the complete Illinois exam-day checklist for arrival, launch, permitted items, and security.

Illinois PSI identification FAQ

What ID do you need for the Illinois real estate exam?

Bring one current, valid, unexpired government-issued identification containing your photograph and signature. The first and last name must match the name used to schedule with PSI.

Does PSI require one ID or two IDs?

The current Illinois Candidate Information Booklet requires one form of identification that satisfies the listed government-issue, validity, photo, signature, and name conditions.

Which IDs does PSI accept?

PSI lists a state-issued driver's license or ID, temporary state-issued driver's license or ID, U.S. government passport, U.S. military ID, U.S. alien registration card, foreign government passport, or foreign government ID.

Can you use an expired ID?

No. The document must be current, valid, and unexpired. Renew or obtain another listed ID before the appointment.

Can you use a temporary driver's license or state ID?

The current PSI booklet lists a temporary state-issued driver's license or identification card. It must still meet the current name, validity, photograph, and signature conditions.

Can you use a passport for the Illinois real estate exam?

Yes. PSI lists a U.S. government-issued passport and a foreign government-issued passport when the document satisfies the current validity, photo, signature, and name requirements.

Can you use a military ID for a remote PSI exam?

No. The current booklet lists U.S. government-issued military ID for a test center but states that military ID is not allowed for remote testing.

What if your ID name does not match the PSI booking?

Contact PSI before the appointment and resolve the account or booking name. PSI says failure to present proper identification invalidates the registration, prevents testing as scheduled, and forfeits the fee.

Can you show a photo or copy of your ID?

Do not assume a photo, scan, photocopy, or wallet screenshot qualifies. Prepare the current government-issued document listed by PSI and ask PSI before test day if your document format is unusual.

What happens if you arrive without acceptable ID?

PSI says the registration becomes invalid, you cannot test as scheduled, and the examination fee is forfeited.
