PSI access and accommodations

How do you request an Illinois real estate exam accommodation?

Start with the official PSI request form, not the test-day proctor. Describe the testing barrier and the specific modification you need, provide only the documentation the current process requests, wait for a written decision, and schedule through the approved instructions. First check whether your item is already on PSI's pre-approved comfort-aids list.

How do you request an accommodation?

Short answer: Use the PSI accommodation request form linked by the Illinois booklet. Complete every required field, upload the requested support, monitor PSI's response, and do not assume a normal appointment includes a pending or approved modification.

A submitted form is not an approved accommodation

Keep the request record, respond to follow-up promptly, and wait for PSI's written decision. The appointment should reflect the approved conditions before exam day.

Who can request alternative arrangements?

The Illinois booklet says PSI examination centers provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. It directs applicants with disabilities or those who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination to request alternative arrangements.

The purpose is access to the examination, not an easier passing standard. The national and Illinois content, required knowledge, and scoring standards remain the same unless an official instruction says otherwise.

Accommodation or comfort aid?

PSI publishes a list of personal items that do not require a formal accommodation. The test-center administrator or online check-in specialist can visually inspect approved items, and item-specific conditions still apply.

This table is not the complete list. Review PSI's current pre-approved comfort-aids policy for exact items and packaging, noise, inspection, test-center, and remote conditions.

What should the request explain?

A useful request connects three things:

  1. The limitation: the functional condition that affects testing.
  2. The exam barrier: how the standard timer, room, display, input, audio, break, or access condition creates difficulty.
  3. The requested modification: the specific change that would address that barrier.

Specific beats broad

"I need two five-minute supervised breaks because..." gives the reviewer a clearer testing request than "I need special treatment." The current form and qualified documentation should determine the final wording.

What documentation should you prepare?

Follow the fields and upload instructions in the current PSI form. The needed evidence can depend on the disability, limitation, prior history, and requested modification.

Useful documentation commonly needs to establish:

  • The candidate's identity.
  • The relevant disability or functional limitation.
  • How the limitation affects the testing situation.
  • The recommended modification or support.
  • The qualified source of the assessment or recommendation.

Do not post medical records in a public form, ordinary email, or support channel unless PSI expressly directs that method. Submit only through the official process and include no unrelated history.

When should you submit the request?

Submit early enough for review, follow-up, specialized scheduling, equipment, and seat availability. Do not wait until the standard two-day cancellation boundary or exam week.

Should you schedule before approval?

Follow PSI's current request and decision instructions. The safer sequence is to obtain the approval before booking when the process tells you to wait. A standard appointment does not automatically add extended time, extra breaks, a separate room, or assistive technology.

If you already booked, do not cancel blindly. Contact PSI through the official accommodation request or support process while the ordinary cancellation deadline remains open.

Can the accommodation be used remotely?

Remote availability depends on the approved modification and PSI's technology, monitoring, room, and security requirements. A separate room may fit remote delivery, while a supervised break, specialized device, reader, or other support may require different arrangements.

Before accepting a remote appointment, confirm:

  • The approval expressly applies to remote delivery.
  • The required assistive technology works with PSI software.
  • The break and camera rules are clearly modified where needed.
  • The room and equipment pass the complete tutorial.
  • The appointment displays the approved timing or conditions.

Standard remote testing has no breaks, scratch paper, or physical calculator. Only the written approval and PSI instructions can modify those conditions.

What should you do on exam day?

  1. Bring the required accepted identification.
  2. Arrive early or enter the remote launch process early.
  3. Keep the approval record available outside the secure room.
  4. Disclose approved and pre-approved items during check-in.
  5. Allow visual inspection of comfort aids as required.
  6. Confirm the appointment timer and conditions before starting.
  7. Ask the administrator or proctor to verify a mismatch immediately.
  8. Follow the approved rules exactly during the exam.

Do not begin under a visibly incorrect timer or missing condition and hope it can be fixed after scoring. Raise the issue through the official administrator or proctor channel first.

What if the request is pending or denied?

Use the response or request record to understand whether PSI needs more information, a clearer testing connection, different documentation, or has made a final decision. Reply through the official channel and respect any submission or scheduling instructions.

Do not ask the test-day proctor to overrule a pending or denied request. If an existing appointment will arrive first, address the standard cancellation deadline with PSI.

Prepare for the approved exam conditions

Match practice to the real appointment

Use the approved timing and tools in final review

Pass Illinois gives you original questions, explanations, flashcards, Math Coach, and separate national and state readiness. Once PSI confirms the conditions, practice in matching blocks and target the topics that still need improvement.

Illinois exam accommodations FAQ

Can you get accommodations for the Illinois real estate exam?

Yes. The Illinois PSI booklet says examination centers provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and directs applicants with disabilities or other testing difficulty to request alternative arrangements through PSI's official accommodation form.

Where do you request Illinois exam accommodations?

Use the accommodation request link embedded in the current Illinois PSI candidate booklet. Submit the form completely, provide the requested information and documentation, and monitor the contact method used in the request.

When should you request an accommodation?

Request it as early as possible and before scheduling a standard appointment when the official process instructs you to do so. Approval, delivery options, specialized equipment, and appointment availability can take time to coordinate.

What documentation does PSI require?

Follow the current online form because the required evidence depends on the request and can change. Prepare documentation that explains the disability or limitation, how it affects testing, and the modification being requested. Do not submit unnecessary medical history.

Can you get extended time or extra breaks?

Those are examples of conditions that may require formal approval, not automatic entitlements. Request the specific modification, explain the testing-related need, and wait for PSI's written decision before booking around it.

Do all medical items require an accommodation?

No. PSI publishes a pre-approved comfort-aids list for test-center and online assessments. Listed items do not require a formal accommodation, but they can be visually inspected and must follow the stated conditions.

Are hearing aids, mobility devices, or service animals pre-approved?

PSI's current comfort-aids page lists hearing aids and cochlear implants, canes, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and service animals among pre-approved aids. Review the full current list and any item-specific conditions before the appointment.

Can you choose remote testing with an accommodation?

It depends on the approved modification, technology, security rules, and available delivery options. Do not assume an accommodation approved for a test center can be used remotely. Follow the written approval and PSI scheduling instructions.

Should you schedule before approval?

Avoid booking a standard appointment when the accommodation process tells you to wait. An ordinary appointment does not automatically inherit a pending request, and the test-day proctor cannot be expected to create an unapproved change.

What should you bring on exam day?

Bring the required qualifying ID and any approved or pre-approved aid in the permitted form. Keep the written approval or confirmation available outside the secure room, arrive early, disclose the item during check-in, and follow inspection instructions.
