Take the Illinois real estate exam online or at a test center?

Short answer: Choose a test center if you want PSI-managed technology, scratch paper, a physical calculator, and the possibility of a restroom visit with permission. Choose remote if travel is the bigger risk and you have a compatible computer, private room, stable internet, and the ability to test without a break.

Both formats require proper identification, a name that matches the booking, compliance with security rules, and a computer-delivered examination. Both end with an on-screen result and an emailed score report.

• You want to use a familiar physical calculator.
• You may need a restroom visit during a long appointment.
• Your home internet, power, computer, or webcam is unreliable.
• You cannot guarantee a private, quiet room for the full exam.
• Other people, pets, deliveries, or noise may interrupt you.
• You focus better in a formal, purpose-built setting.

A test center adds travel and arrival risk, but it removes most technology and room-control risk. Map the route in advance, confirm the location shown in your appointment, and plan to arrive 30 minutes early.

• You have a computer that passes every current PSI check.
• Your internet connection is stable for the full appointment.
• You have a private, quiet, adequately lit room.
• You can keep the required camera view without changing spaces.
• You can complete the exam without scratch paper or a break.
• You are comfortable following remote-proctor movement rules.
• Travel creates more uncertainty than your home setup.

Remote is not simply the test-center exam on your own laptop. The delivery rules change how you calculate, take notes, move, use the room, and handle breaks.

The national broker outline gives real estate calculations 7% of the 100 scored national questions. Those items can cover area, commissions, value, loan-to-value, interest, prorations, taxes, and other published calculations.

At a test center, you may use a physical calculator and PSI gives you scratch paper and a pencil. Remote candidates may not use a physical calculator or scratch paper. If handwritten setup is part of your reliable math process, the test center has a meaningful practical advantage.

Remote testing permits no breaks. PSI specifically says candidates who believe they cannot complete the examination without a break should not register for remote delivery.

At a test center, you may leave the room only to use the restroom after obtaining proctor permission. The timer does not stop, and you receive no extra time.

If a disability or another need makes standard conditions difficult, use PSI’s accommodation process before booking or testing. Do not rely on a proctor to create an unapproved accommodation during check-in.

• Adequate light lets the proctor see your activity.
• The webcam can maintain PSI’s required view.
• Internet service is sufficient for continuous administration.
• No prohibited paper, device, food, drink, or personal item is in reach.
• No one enters or communicates with you during the examination.
• You remain in the approved space and on the same computer.

PSI may instruct you to keep your hands on the desktop, eyes on the screen, hands away from your face, and movement controlled. Talking, whispering, mouthing, and covering your mouth can create a security problem.

Run the compatibility check on the computer, browser, webcam, microphone, and network you will actually use. A successful check on a different machine does not protect the appointment.

Both formats require identification that matches the scheduled name. PSI says the ID must be current, valid, unexpired, and contain a photograph and signature. The current booklet lists one notable delivery difference: a U.S. government-issued military ID is not allowed for remote testing.

The Illinois exam-day checklist lists every accepted ID in the booklet and the consequences of a mismatch. Check this before the cancellation deadline, not on the morning of the test.

The remote wording creates a launch window and a late-start warning that candidates can easily misread. Do not calculate your own interpretation. Follow the clock and instructions displayed for your appointment, and contact PSI technical support immediately if the launch fails.

Your PSI account, confirmation, compatibility results, and proctor instructions govern the booked appointment. Follow them when they provide a more specific delivery instruction.
