What are experimental questions on the Illinois real estate exam?

Short answer: They are trial items used in the examination-development process. PSI can present them alongside regular questions, but it excludes them from scoring.

The broker examination has 140 scored items: 100 national and 40 Illinois. If PSI includes 5 to 10 experimental items, the displayed total can be higher than the scored total.

PSI says experimental questions may be administered. Do not assume that every candidate receives exactly 145 or exactly 150 screens.

PSI calls the administration of unscored experimental questions an essential step in developing future licensing examinations. Testing an item in real exam conditions gives examination developers evidence before it might be used as a scored item on a future form.

That purpose does not give a current candidate access to item status, performance data, or the future decision. The candidate's job remains the same: choose the best answer from the information presented.

No reliable candidate method is published. PSI does not say that experimental items appear at the end, use special wording, cover obscure topics, or feel harder.

Guessing that an item is unscored creates asymmetric risk. If you are wrong, you have casually abandoned a real point.

No. The published standards remain 70% raw for the 100-point national broker portion and 75% for the 40-point Illinois portion. Experimental items are not added to those scored denominators.

PSI says experimental items count against examination time. The timer does not pause because the current item will later be excluded from scoring.

The candidate booklet lists 150 minutes for the 100 scored national items and 90 minutes for the 40 scored Illinois items. Another current PSI Illinois page displays 3.5 hours total, so confirm the timer shown for your appointment. Whatever timer applies, the experimental items use part of it.

1. Read the task word and identify the tested role or rule.
2. Eliminate answers that are legally, mathematically, or procedurally wrong.
3. Choose the best remaining answer.
4. Flag the item if the interface permits and uncertainty remains.
5. Move on before one point consumes several questions' time.
6. Return during the review buffer.
7. Submit an answer for every item.

This method works whether the question is scored or experimental, which is exactly why it is safer than trying to identify status.

No single universal cutoff fits every candidate and delivery timer. Use a two-pass rule instead:

A difficult calculation with a clear path may deserve more time than a vague conceptual item with no new insight after rereading. Keep the choice tied to point opportunity, not frustration.

Change an answer when you identify a concrete reason: a missed exception, reversed role, calculation error, unit mismatch, or rule that clearly makes another choice better. Do not change merely because the question felt experimental or unfamiliar.

• Re-read words such as except, not, first, best, and most likely.
• Confirm whose duty or interest the question asks about.
• Check arithmetic and units once.
• Keep the original answer when no new reason appears.

Practice should train the uncertainty, not pretend to include real PSI experimental items.

Never market a practice question as a copied live item or claim to know which current PSI questions are experimental.

• Skipping an item because it looks unusual.
• Assuming the last 5 to 10 questions are unscored.
• Adding experimental items to the passing-score denominator.
• Panicking when the displayed total exceeds 140.
• Spending several minutes trying to identify item status.
• Budgeting time for exactly 140 screens with no buffer.
• Leaving an answer blank when a best choice can be made.
