Illinois broker question format

Is the Illinois real estate exam multiple choice?

Yes. The Illinois broker examination is computer-based, and PSI's standard broker sample questions present four options with one keyed answer. Expect direct knowledge, best-answer distinctions, applied scenarios, and calculations. Before the scored exam, an untimed tutorial lets you practice answering and reviewing on the computer.

What is the question format?

Short answer: Read one question, choose the single best answer, and use the computer controls to proceed or review. The published broker samples show four choices. Some wrong choices are designed to sound plausible until the candidate applies the exact role, rule, timing, or calculation.

Answer the question that was asked

An option can state a true fact and still be wrong for the stem. The best answer must solve the stated problem for the stated person at the stated time.

Is the standard broker exam the weighted scenario format?

No. The booklet specifically assigns its special scenario-based format with more than four options and weighted zero-, one-, or two-point answers to the Instructor and Managing Broker National portion.

Examination
Standard broker
Published format note
Sample questions show four options and one keyed answer
Examination
Instructor National
Published format note
Special scenario items may have more than four weighted options
Examination
Managing Broker National

A standard broker candidate should not study a multi-point instructor scenario and assume the same scoring mechanics apply to the broker exam.

How do best-answer questions work?

Best-answer wording is not permission for arbitrary judgment. One choice should resolve the question more completely under the tested rule.

  1. Identify the person or role in the stem.
  2. Identify the exact task word.
  3. Locate the timing in the transaction or license process.
  4. Recall the controlling rule and any stated exception.
  5. Eliminate choices that answer a different question.
  6. Choose the most complete lawful answer.

Plausible is not the same as best

A choice may be something a broker could eventually do while another choice is the required first action. Words such as first, before, promptly, or must make timing decisive.

How should you handle negative stems?

Negative wording reverses the task. Before considering choices, mentally restate the target:

Stem word
EXCEPT
Your target
Find the choice outside the otherwise correct group
Stem word
NOT
Your target
Find the false or inapplicable choice
Stem word
LEAST likely
Your target
Find the weakest fit
Stem word
FALSE
Your target
Find the statement that does not hold

Recheck the stem immediately before submitting. Many negative-stem misses come from answering the ordinary positive question instead.

What do calculation questions look like?

PSI's published broker samples include a financing calculation, and the national outline includes math across valuation, finance, property measurement, commissions, prorations, and investment concepts.

  1. Write what the question asks for.
  2. List only the facts needed.
  3. Convert percent to decimal and units when necessary.
  4. Select the formula before touching the answer choices.
  5. Calculate and estimate the reasonable range.
  6. Match units and direction to the answer.

Use the Illinois real estate math drill to practice formulas without memorizing one question.

What should you do with unfamiliar wording?

Unfamiliar wording does not automatically mean unfamiliar content. Reduce the stem to its structure:

Find
Role
Ask
Who is acting or protected?
Find
Topic
Ask
Agency, contract, title, finance, license law, or another area?
Find
Time
Ask
Before, during, after, or by a deadline?
Find
Task
Ask
Definition, calculation, duty, exception, or best action?
Find
Constraint
Ask
What fact changes the ordinary rule?

Once those elements are clear, eliminate choices that violate the topic or answer the wrong actor.

What happens in the computer tutorial?

PSI provides an introductory tutorial before the examination. You may spend up to 15 minutes on it, and that time does not count against the examination timer. Sample questions follow so you can practice answering and reviewing.

  • Learn how to select and change an answer.
  • Find next, previous, review, or flag controls that are shown.
  • Locate the timer and progress indicators.
  • Confirm how unanswered items are displayed.
  • Find the Comments link on the function bar.

Use the tutorial as interface training. It is not a scored content warm-up and should not be rushed when the controls are unfamiliar.

Can you review or comment on a question?

The tutorial includes practice reviewing answers. Use the actual controls shown in your session to flag and revisit items.

PSI also provides a Comments link for a substantive concern. Examination-development staff analyze comments, but PSI does not respond individually. Answer the question, add a concise comment if warranted, and continue. A comment is not a reason to copy or disclose exam content.

PSI says its published samples illustrate style and format but do not represent the full content or difficulty range. Use the official outline, not five sample questions, as the coverage plan.

What question-format mistakes cost points?

  • Choosing a true statement that does not answer the stem.
  • Missing not, except, first, best, most, or least.
  • Answering for the wrong party or license role.
  • Ignoring when in the process the question occurs.
  • Using an answer choice to choose the math formula.
  • Reading extra facts into the scenario.
  • Changing an answer without a concrete new reason.
  • Assuming a special managing-broker format applies to broker.

Illinois question-format FAQ

Is the Illinois real estate broker exam multiple choice?

Yes. PSI's standard broker sample questions use four answer options with one keyed answer, and the exam is administered by computer.

How many answers can you select?

For the standard broker format, select the single best answer to each question. The special weighted scenario format with more than four options is identified in the booklet for Instructor and Managing Broker National examinations, not the standard broker exam.

Are questions shown on a computer?

Yes. PSI says the examination is computer-administered and candidates use a mouse and keyboard.

Is there a tutorial before the exam?

Yes. PSI provides an introductory computer tutorial of up to 15 minutes that does not count against examination time. Sample questions let you practice answering and reviewing.

Are there scenario questions?

Expect questions that apply a rule to facts, a role, a transaction stage, or a calculation. The standard broker sample set includes direct concepts, best-answer wording, and a math problem.

Are there math questions?

Yes. The national outline includes calculations, and PSI's broker sample set includes a loan-and-cash calculation. Practice solving from the facts and answer options without relying on recalled wording.

Can two answers look correct?

They can both sound plausible, but one should answer the exact task better. Identify the role, timing, legal duty, exception, and words such as first, best, most, least, not, or except.

Can you review answers before submitting?

PSI says the tutorial includes practice reviewing answers. Learn the live interface's review or flag controls during the tutorial and use the controls shown for your session.

Can you comment on a questionable exam item?

Yes. PSI provides a Comments link on the question-screen function bar. Examination-development staff review substantive comments, but PSI does not respond to candidates individually.

Are practice questions copied from the live exam?

Legitimate preparation should use original questions aligned to the official outline, not copied or claimed live items. PSI's published samples illustrate style but not the full content or difficulty range.
