How to use AI to study for the Illinois real estate exam
Ask for a clearer explanation, then check the rule yourself. A confident answer, a realistic question and a plausible citation can all be wrong.

Use AI with a source beside it
Start with a current public PSI, IDFPR or legal source. Give the AI one short passage, ask it to stay within that passage and answer the practice question before opening the explanation. Check every rule, number and citation against the source. Keep uncertain answers out of your study notes until you resolve them. This is a study workflow, not a Pass Illinois AI tutor or a substitute for required education.
A study routine you can repeat
- Choose one gap. Use a missed or uncertain answer, then locate its topic in the broker content outline. Keep national concepts separate from Illinois-specific duties.
- Open the authority. Use the official-source directory. Record the title, section, edition and applicable date. For law, read the operative provision and exceptions. For booking instructions, use the current PSI program instructions.
- Supply a short public passage. Give enough context to preserve conditions. Ask the AI to identify what the passage does and does not establish. Pasting a link alone does not prove the tool read it.
- Answer before the explanation. Write your reason, including the deciding fact. Check the explanation for every choice, not just the selected one. Mark a correct guess as uncertain.
- Verify, then vary. Check the explanation against the source. Recalculate the math yourself. Try a changed fact only after the original rule checks out.
- Save the correction. Keep the rule, source edition, citation and reason for the error in your mistake tracker. Recheck later without the explanation visible.
NIST describes a risk of confidently wrong generated content, including misleading reasoning or citations. The prompts below help you inspect an answer; they do not make generated material reliable by themselves.
Four prompts to adapt
Replace the brackets with your own public source and notes. Select a prompt to copy it. These are study suggestions, not tested product features or a guarantee that any model will follow every instruction.
1. Explain a public source
I am preparing for the Illinois real estate broker exam. Use only the public passage below. Identify whether it concerns national concepts or Illinois law. Explain who must act, what triggers the rule, the timing and any exception stated in the passage. Cite its section or page. Do not fill gaps from memory. Say 'not established by this passage' when necessary. Source title, edition, section, URL and passage: [insert].
2. Ask me one original question
Using only this verified passage, write one original four-choice teaching question. Include every fact needed for one defensible answer. Do not imitate, reconstruct or request secure PSI questions. Show only the question and choices first. Wait for my answer and reason. Then explain each choice, identify the decisive fact and cite the exact supporting passage. If the source cannot support one answer, stop and identify what is missing. Passage and citation: [insert].
3. Change a fact
Here is my verified rule and original practice example: [insert]. Change one fact that matters to the decision. Ask me whether the answer changes and why. Wait before showing the answer. Then explain the effect using the supplied source. Do not invent a new exception. Label any extra factual assumption.
4. Check my explanation
Compare my explanation with this verified source. Separate supported statements, mistakes and points the passage does not settle. Check the actor, trigger, deadline, units and exceptions. For calculations, show the formula, substitution and units. Do not give me a readiness rating. My explanation: [insert]. Source and passage: [insert].
Worked check: 70 raw points and an old scaled 75
Deliberately incorrect practice statement: “You need 75 correct national answers because the old passing score was 75.” This is a constructed error for this lesson, not a captured AI output.
Open the June 24, 2026 PSI booklet at the printed page 11 broker summary and its footnote. The national broker portion has 100 scored questions and a 70% raw passing score. The Illinois portion has 40 scored questions and a 75% raw passing score. The footnote distinguishes the former national scaled 75 from the current national raw 70%. It does not give a formula to convert every raw score.
- Check the numbers
- National: 100 × 0.70 = 70 correct. Illinois: 40 × 0.75 = 30 correct.
- Keep the limits
- Both portions must pass separately. These are the official cutoffs, not a recommended target score for an unvalidated AI quiz.
- Fix the note
- “Broker: national 70 of 100; Illinois 30 of 40. Old scaled national 75 is not 75 correct national answers.” Save the citation with that correction.
Try it: 74 national and 29 Illinois. Did both portions pass?
No. National meets its cutoff, but Illinois is one correct answer below 30. The national margin does not offset the Illinois result. This arithmetic example does not determine anyone’s actual score report or retake eligibility.
Reject a question that cannot support its answer
- It cites another state’s law, an appraiser exam, a managing-broker rule or a proposed bill as the Illinois initial-broker rule.
- Two choices fit, a necessary fact is missing or the explanation silently adds facts.
- The linked page does not contain the claimed rule, or the quotation drops an exception.
- A calculation uses the wrong base, omits units or rounds without the question’s instruction.
- It promises actual PSI questions, exam predictions or a guaranteed pass.
If you cannot resolve the problem, set the item aside. Ask an approved instructor about the specific rule and passage. Repeating the question in another model is not a substitute for checking the authority.
Keep private records and secure exam content out
Use fictional names and figures. Do not paste your Social Security number, ITIN, identification image, login details, payment information or another person’s records into a study chat. Review the tool’s current privacy terms before providing any personal material.
Use public sources and original teaching questions. Do not upload, reconstruct or request recalled live exam items. These prompts are for preparation outside the exam. Follow PSI’s examination security instructions for the actual appointment.
Use the explanation without the AI
Try the free source-linked question sampler, then explain a changed fact without looking. If mobile practice fits your routine, try the Pass Illinois app. It starts free, with an optional paid upgrade. This guide and the public questions remain free.
Common questions
Can I use AI to study for the Illinois real estate exam?
You can use it as a study aid: simplify a passage, ask for an original example or check your explanation. Verify its output against current public sources. This guide does not authorize AI use during an examination or replace approved pre-license education.
Which AI gives the most accurate Illinois exam answers?
We have not tested or ranked AI products for Illinois exam accuracy. Check the particular output, source edition and legal conditions rather than relying on a product name or a confidence score.
What if the AI gives me a link to a law?
Open it. Check the actual section, effective date, actor and exceptions. A real link can lead to the wrong provision, and a quotation can leave out a condition. If the page does not support the answer, do not learn that answer as a rule.
Can an AI practice score tell me whether I will pass?
No. A generated set has not been shown to match PSI difficulty, coverage or scoring. Familiar answers can inflate the result too. Use it to uncover a topic to review, then check your reasoning on unfamiliar, source-supported material.
Does Pass Illinois offer an AI tutor or Spanish study materials?
This page teaches a platform-neutral study method. It does not announce an AI tutor or Spanish materials. Pass Illinois study content is offered in English.
