Illinois broker scoring guide
What score do you need to pass the Illinois real estate exam?
You need two passing results, not one combined total. PSI lists a 70% raw passing standard for the 100-point national broker portion and 75% for the 40-point Illinois portion. That means at least 70 national points and 30 Illinois points. A strong score on one side cannot cover a miss on the other.
What is the Illinois broker exam passing score?
Short answer: Pass national with 70% raw and Illinois with 75%. PSI scores each portion independently. In the current summary table, those standards correspond to 70 of 100 national points and 30 of 40 Illinois points.

Both rows must say pass
Do not add the two scores, average them, or assume extra national points transfer to Illinois. The two-portion rule is why your practice dashboard should keep national and Illinois separate.

These examples apply the published standards directly. They do not predict how PSI will display a particular score report. Follow the pass or fail result and reapplication instructions on your own report.
Why do some websites say the passing score is 75?
Older material may describe a national broker scaled score of 75. The current PSI booklet reports the national standard as 70% raw and explains that 70% is equivalent to the scaled score of 75 previously reported and required to pass.
PSI also says the passing standard remained identical when reporting changed from scaled scores to raw scores. In other words, the number shown changed, but PSI did not lower the level required to pass.
Use current wording
For today’s national broker result, use 70% raw. Do not demand both 70 and 75 on the same report, and do not treat the old scaled 75 as a higher second cutoff.
How many questions can you miss?
On the published scored totals, 70 of 100 national points and 30 of 40 Illinois points meet the standards. That arithmetic leaves up to 30 national points or 10 Illinois points below a perfect score.
Use points, not the number of screens you remember seeing. PSI may include 5 to 10 unidentified experimental questions. Those items are not scored but count against time, so the total number of questions presented may exceed 140.
You cannot tell which items are experimental. Answer every question as though it counts and pace for the appointment timer shown by PSI.
What appears on the score report?
PSI displays the score on screen at the end of the examination and emails a score report. Reports are also available to print in the Manage area of the PSI account.
If you fail, the emailed report includes diagnostic information showing strengths and weaknesses by examination type. It also provides reapplication instructions. Save the report and turn the diagnostic categories into the next study plan.
The failed-exam recovery guide shows how to convert those categories into focused practice.
What if you pass one portion and fail the other?
PSI requires you to repeat only the failed portion. Passing national lets you focus the next registration on Illinois, and passing Illinois lets you focus on national.
Standard broker candidates may make up to four attempts during the two-year eligibility period. After a fourth failed attempt, the standard broker route requires repeating the 75-hour education and the entire examination. The Illinois exam retake-rules guide explains standard, endorsement, and education-exempt cases.
What practice score should you target?
The official cutoffs are pass or fail standards, not ideal practice targets. A score that clears a cutoff once can reflect familiar questions, an easy set, untimed work, or a temporary strength.
Use stronger evidence:
- Several new, timed, closed-note sets.
- National and Illinois tracked independently.
- A repeatable cushion above each official cutoff.
- Stable results in high-weight and previously weak topics.
- Enough time to read the final questions carefully.
- Explanations for why plausible wrong choices fail.
The free Illinois broker exam readiness check combines these signals without pretending to predict a pass.
What happens after you pass?
Passing both portions completes the examination requirement, but it does not issue the Illinois broker license automatically. Follow the score-report instructions, satisfy the remaining licensing requirements, and apply through IDFPR within one year of passing.
Missing that one-year application window causes the examination accreditation to be lost and requires the appropriate examination again.

Illinois passing-score FAQ
What score do you need to pass the Illinois real estate exam?
You need 70% raw on the national broker portion and 75% on the Illinois portion. PSI scores the portions separately, so you must meet both standards.
How many points do you need on the national portion?
The PSI summary lists 100 scored national questions worth 100 points and a 70% raw passing standard. That corresponds to 70 of the 100 scored points.
How many points do you need on the Illinois portion?
The Illinois portion has 40 scored questions worth 40 points and a 75% passing standard. That corresponds to 30 of the 40 scored points.
Do national and Illinois scores get averaged?
No. The portions are scored separately. A high result on one cannot offset a failing result on the other.
Is the national passing score 70 or 75?
The current booklet reports the national broker standard as 70% raw. PSI explains that this is equivalent to the scaled score of 75 that was reported previously. The passing standard itself did not change.
Do experimental questions affect your score?
No. PSI may include 5 to 10 unidentified experimental questions that are not scored. They do use examination time, and candidates cannot identify them.
What happens if you pass only one portion?
PSI requires you to repeat only the failed portion, subject to the applicable attempt and eligibility rules. Keep the score report and follow its reapplication instructions.
When do you receive the score report?
PSI displays the score on screen at the end of the examination and emails the score report. You can also print reports from the Manage area of your PSI account.
What practice score should you aim for?
No practice score guarantees a pass. Use several new, timed, closed-note sets and look for a repeatable cushion above 70% national and 75% Illinois, along with stable performance in weak categories.
Does passing the exam issue the Illinois broker license?
No. Passing both portions does not issue a license automatically. Follow the score-report instructions and apply to IDFPR within one year of passing while meeting the remaining licensing requirements.
