How long does an Illinois real estate license take?
Plan around the steps you can schedule and the approvals you must receive. The required course hours are fixed; your course calendar, exam readiness, appointments and application review determine the finish date.

How long should you allow?
There is no fixed statewide completion time. For the standard first-time broker route, you need 75 approved course hours, PSI eligibility, passing results on the national and Illinois portions, an application and the licensure and sponsorship needed to practice.
Start with your school's actual completion and transcript dates. Add preparation, the available PSI appointment and time to resolve an application deficiency. Sponsor interviews can run alongside study. Neither a course advertisement nor an exam pass guarantees an active-license date.
This guide covers a first-time broker using the 75-hour route. Active Illinois attorneys and out-of-state endorsement applicants have different education and eligibility rules.
The sequence from enrollment to lawful practice

PSI's booklet directs standard candidates to upload their course certificate and wait for approval confirmation. Do not build your entire plan around an appointment you cannot yet book. The PSI registration guide explains that stage.
Before enrolling, check both the provider and the courses using IDFPR's current approved-education resources. Ask the school for the applied-course schedule, assessment requirements and expected record-release date.
Estimate the education stage without guessing
If a provider's approved schedule supplies a stated number of course hours each week, divide 75 by that weekly number to estimate the education stage. Then use the actual course calendar to account for assessments, the applied component and record release.

These are arithmetic examples, not typical completion times or school recommendations. Approved course hours are an education measure; they are not a promise of the same number of elapsed clock hours. Extra reading and exam practice also take time.
Example: Noor works full time
Noor selects a course whose approved calendar ends on November 20. She asks when the completion records will be available, checks her national and state practice results separately, and interviews sponsors while studying.
Her first exam date depends on PSI approval, current availability and readiness. If she passes both portions, she can move to the application stage. If she fails one, she updates the plan around that portion rather than repeating every study session.
November 20 is the education milestone. It is not her lawful practice start date.
Keep the two legal deadlines separate

Section 5-35 names different triggers. Finishing the sixty-hour component alone does not start the full-completion calculation. Use the official records and resolve conflicting eligibility dates with PSI.
For example, if the complete required education is finished on November 20, 2026, its two-year anniversary is November 20, 2028. If the passing result is received on December 18, 2026, the one-year anniversary is December 18, 2027. These dates illustrate the two clocks; apply early and confirm the official deadlines for your record.
Submitting a file at the end of the year is risky because the statute also requires meeting the licensure requirements. A missing item still matters. See the application-deadline guide.
What if you fail one portion?
PSI ordinarily requires a retake of the failed portion only. For the standard broker route, the booklet allows up to four attempts within the two-year eligibility period. After the fourth failure, the standard candidate must repeat the 75-hour education and the entire exam.
Endorsement and education-exempt candidates have different provisions. Read the retake guide for your route. Leave time for a possible retake, but choose your first appointment from readiness evidence rather than assuming you will fail.
The finish line is permission to practice
Section 5-15 requires a license and valid sponsorship registered with IDFPR before covered brokerage activity. A passing screen, submission receipt or verbal sponsor offer does not replace those requirements.
Check the official license record and coordinate the start with the sponsoring broker. IDFPR's brokerage page gives a posting estimate in its renewal instructions. Do not use that estimate as a processing promise for a new-license application.
