Illinois broker endorsement: what to complete before you apply
An active out-of-state broker license or equivalent can qualify you to seek Illinois licensure by endorsement. It does not transfer automatically. The route requires an approved 30-hour endorsement course, an Illinois-law examination, official license records and an IDFPR application. Arrange Illinois sponsorship if you want active status.

Use endorsement for a new application in 2026
The former reciprocity rule, section 1450.440 bars new or reconsidered broker reciprocity applications on or after January 1, 2026. It preserves licenses granted before that date. An old list of reciprocal states is therefore the wrong starting point for a new application.
The current IDFPR endorsement packet requires an active license in good standing as a broker or equivalent in another state or jurisdiction. The title on an out-of-state credential may differ from the Illinois title. Ask IDFPR to confirm an uncertain equivalence before buying a course; a lapsed credential or a pending application is not the same qualification.
The current PSI broker endorsement section also lists a minimum age of 18 and high-school graduation or an equivalent qualification. Its misplaced license-level label does not make an 18-year-old eligible for managing-broker endorsement. Resolve a credential or education question with IDFPR before selecting a course or examination.

Build the file in stages
Section 1450.460 sets the broker endorsement requirements. Start by checking your credential, then work through the course, examination and licensing file. These are separate stages, even when a provider markets them as one package.

Choose the exact 30-hour course
The official broker endorsement curriculum focuses on Illinois licensing, practice rules and disclosures. A national exam-prep product or ordinary CE package does not replace that approved course. Use the provider and course links on the IDFPR brokerage page and verify the exact course before paying.
Check PSI eligibility before booking
The PSI booklet dated June 24, 2026 calls for the endorsement transcript and describes certificate upload and eligibility confirmation. Its broker endorsement paragraph contains an inconsistent Managing Broker label; the separate broker rule and IDFPR broker curriculum identify the intended route. If the displayed exam route is unclear, confirm it with PSI before paying.
The booklet gives endorsement education a two-year validity period and lists unlimited broker endorsement attempts during the two-year eligibility period. Do not copy the standard category's four-attempt limit into this route. Unlimited attempts do not remove deadlines or fees. Request records from each licensing jurisdiction
The packet accepts its agency-certification form or an official license history containing the required information. A screenshot of a public lookup is not the requested certification. Check your name, profession, status and history across the records, transcript and score report before assembling the licensing application.
The broker rule also requires a service-of-process designation and an attestation accepting the Act and Department jurisdiction. Follow the current packet for the applicable forms. A managing broker's self-sponsorship and special-account documents should not be assumed to apply to an ordinary broker.
Separate the application fee from the full cost
The packet marked Rev 7/25, currently linked by IDFPR, lists a $150 nonrefundable broker application fee. That is an application charge, not the total cost of getting licensed.

Use the current packet's payment and submission instructions. Its ePay cover sheet describes emailing the application and supporting documents with the completed payment section after online payment. The application instructions also describe the check or money-order mailing route. Keep the payment confirmation with the submitted packet so IDFPR can match it to the application. A payment by itself is not a submitted licensing file or permission to begin work.
Do not send identity documents or licensing records to an exam-prep company for processing. Follow IDFPR's current application channel, keep a complete copy and use the contact printed on the packet for a question about that file.
Plan the first renewal before accepting a start date
Under section 1450.460(b), a broker with less than two years of immediately preceding active practice as a broker or equivalent must complete 45 post-license hours by the first renewal. This is a broker education condition, rather than a rule that every broker applicant must wait two years before applying.
Example: a newer out-of-state licensee
Assume IDFPR confirms that Avery's active out-of-state credential qualifies for broker endorsement. Avery has actively practiced for the immediately preceding 14 months. Avery should plan for the 30-hour endorsement course and Illinois-law exam before licensing, then the 45-hour post-license requirement by the first Illinois renewal.
If Avery instead has 28 months of immediately preceding active practice, the less-than-two-year trigger in this endorsement rule no longer applies. Holding a license for 28 months while practicing for only 14 does not establish 28 months of active practice. Keep the dates and status records for IDFPR to assess, and confirm the actual first-term education assigned.
Do not infer the first expiry date from a generic course advertisement. Check the issued credential and IDFPR's instructions, then use the post-license guide to plan the required courses.
The packet says an approved applicant without a Sponsor Card receives inactive status. To request active status, provide the specified Illinois sponsorship proof. Passing the examination, paying the fee or holding another state's license does not authorize active Illinois brokerage work. Illinois broker endorsement questions
Does Illinois still offer real estate license reciprocity?
New broker reciprocity applications cannot be submitted or granted on or after January 1, 2026. The current route for a qualifying out-of-state licensee is endorsement. Licenses already granted under reciprocal agreements before that date remain in force and may be renewed under Illinois requirements.
Do I need two years of experience for broker endorsement?
Do not import the managing-broker entry requirement into the broker route. Section 1450.460 instead requires 45 post-license hours by the first renewal when the broker has less than two years of immediately preceding active practice as a broker or equivalent. IDFPR must assess your actual credential and history.
Do I take the national examination again?
The broker endorsement rule calls for an approved examination on Illinois-specific real estate brokerage laws. Confirm the broker endorsement examination shown in PSI before paying, rather than selecting the standard initial exam or a managing-broker exam from an old guide.
Can I get the license before choosing an Illinois sponsor?
The current application says an approved applicant without a Sponsor Card receives inactive status. Active status requires the specified Illinois sponsorship documentation. An inactive license, passing score or pending application does not authorize active brokerage work.
Does the standard four-attempt rule apply to endorsement?
The June 24, 2026 PSI booklet lists unlimited broker endorsement attempts during the two-year eligibility period. That is different from its standard broker category. It does not mean unlimited eligibility, free retakes or an extension of course validity.
How long will endorsement approval take?
No individual processing time is established here. An incomplete certification, course record or application can require follow-up. Keep the submitted packet and payment record, use the application contact for a status question, and wait for the license and valid sponsorship before performing active Illinois brokerage work.
