Can you use a calculator on the Illinois real estate exam?
A physical calculator is allowed at a PSI test center and prohibited during remote proctoring. The live Illinois portal FAQ limits test-center devices to silent, battery-operated, nonprogrammable calculators without paper-tape printing or an alphabet keyboard. Confirm your model and any digital tools for the delivery method you book.

What does the current Illinois booklet allow?
The Illinois PSI Candidate Information Booklet, June 24, 2026, states the physical-calculator distinction on printed page 9. Printed page 10 prohibits scratch paper remotely. The same current-edition PDF was rechecked on October 22, 2026.

What features can a test-center calculator have?
Checked October 22, 2026: the live Illinois PSI program FAQ, under PSI Exam Center Regulations, specifies these features:
- Nonprogrammable.
- Silent operation.
- Battery power.
- No paper-tape printing.
- No alphabet keyboard.
This is more specific than the booklet's permission to use a physical calculator. It is a test-center rule, not a remote exception. Neither inspected source supplies an approved model list. A device being familiar, sold for real estate or labeled scientific does not by itself establish acceptance.
A useful model question for PSI
"I am taking the Illinois initial broker exam at a test center. Is [manufacturer and exact model] acceptable? It has [describe any feature you are unsure about]. Does the center supply a calculator, or should I bring my own qualifying device?"
Keep the answer with the appointment instructions. Practice on the accepted device, check its power and learn how to clear the current calculation and memory. Follow the administrator's check-in and storage directions. Do not attach formulas or notes.
What is confirmed about remote digital tools?
The public Illinois materials inspected for this review do not establish a particular remote onscreen calculator, digital whiteboard, scratchpad, memory function or keyboard shortcut. That is a limit of the public evidence reviewed, not proof that every remote session lacks those tools.
PSI's current system-requirements page says the confirmation assigns Secure Browser or Chrome Extension. For Secure Browser, it directs booked candidates to the tutorial in My Tests. A hardware compatibility check does not confirm all software requirements or identify which math tools an Illinois appointment enables.

Ask about the booked Illinois exam, not just PSI in general
- Is a digital calculator enabled for this Illinois broker exam and delivery method?
- Which operations, memory functions or shortcuts are authorized?
- Is a digital whiteboard or notepad available?
- Does the assigned tutorial demonstrate the same math tools as the exam, or only check-in and technical setup?
- What should I do if an expected authorized tool is missing or fails during the session?
Use the official Illinois PSI contact route and the instructions attached to your appointment. A demo from another state, a product-launch article or an old customer-service sheet is not confirmation of your Illinois configuration. No private booked tutorial or live exam interface was inspected for this review, and no support response is represented as received.
If a digital calculator or writing tool is essential to your math plan, resolve the question before depending on remote delivery or paying to change formats. A last-minute assumption leaves little time to arrange another appointment or an approved accommodation.
Never substitute your own calculator app, spreadsheet, notes program, browser tab or physical writing board. The booklet prohibits outside applications and materials unless provided or approved for the exam. Raise a tool problem through the authorized proctor or support route instead.
How should the calculator rule affect your practice?
The national broker outline assigns 7 percent to Real Estate Calculations. It is a scored-topic weight, not a guarantee that only seven questions in the whole session involve numbers. Financing, valuation and other topics can also require numerical reasoning.
A calculator handles arithmetic after you identify the base, rate, units and requested result. Practice those decisions as well as button entry.
Example: enter the rate, then check the size
An original practice question gives a 2 percent fee on a stated $150,000 base. The calculation is $150,000 × 0.02 = $3,000. One percent is $1,500, so twice that is a useful check. Entering 2 as the decimal rate would produce $300,000, a result 100 times too large. A percent key may behave differently by device; learn the accepted tool's behavior before exam day.

Which calculator can I bring to the test center?

Will PSI provide a calculator at the test center?

Is an onscreen calculator guaranteed for the remote exam?

Confirm the tools enabled for your Illinois broker appointment through the assigned instructions and PSI before relying on one.
Can I use a phone, smartwatch or my computer's calculator app?
No. A calculator function does not authorize a prohibited phone or smartwatch, and the booklet prohibits using an outside computer application not provided or approved by PSI. Do not open a separate calculator, notes app, browser tab or spreadsheet during the secure exam.
Does no remote scratch paper mean a digital whiteboard is provided?
No such promise is established by the inspected public Illinois materials. The physical-paper restriction and digital-tool availability are separate questions. Ask PSI whether a whiteboard or notepad is enabled for the booked exam and which tutorial, if any, demonstrates those same tools.
Can an accommodation change the standard calculator rule?
Follow the written approved accommodation and PSI's scheduling and exam instructions for that arrangement. Request an accommodation through the published process before booking as directed. Do not assume that an unapproved device or extra application becomes allowed at check-in.
