How to change your Illinois real estate license information
Illinois applicants and licensees must report a change of address, email address, telephone number or office location within 24 hours after the change. Use IDFPR's required process and save the confirmation. A legal name change needs the current personal-change request and supporting proof; an office, sponsor or firm change may require a separate filing.

Which change has the 24-hour reporting rule?
225 ILCS 454/5-41 names four changes: address, email address, telephone number and office location. It applies to applicants as well as licensees. Rule 1450.150(a) repeats that reporting duty and requires the Division's prescribed format.

For physical offices and virtual office websites or digital platforms, Rule 1450.150(c) requires the stated information and change notice within 24 hours. Rule 1450.150(d) separately addresses sponsoring-broker business-information changes. These duties can overlap; completing one personal field does not establish that all affected business records were updated.
Rule 1450.705(a) also requires a designated managing broker to notify the Division within 24 hours of a change in the business address of offices they manage. Coordinate the filings with the sponsoring broker and designated managing broker. For the contact-reporting clock, 24 hours from an ordinary Tuesday 2 p.m. change reaches Wednesday 2 p.m.; it is not permission to leave the update until renewal.
Where is the current personal-change request?
- Start at the IDFPR Real Estate Brokerage page and open License Maintenance.
- Choose Name & Address Change Requests. Its current destination is the Personal Information Change Request guidance.
- Follow the agency link to the current form entry page. Identify the record as it currently appears, then select the details that need updating.
- Complete the requested new information and supporting uploads, review the declaration, and retain the submission confirmation.
The current form has separate choices for name, address, telephone and email. Its License Number field instructs a pending applicant who is not yet licensed to enter zeros. That instruction is specific to the pending-applicant situation; an existing licensee supplies the actual license number.
For a name change, the form lists marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, naturalization document and driver's license as upload options. The introductory agency page says acceptable documentation depends on the type of change. Use the support that fits your actual request and respond to any deficiency notice.
The updated mailing-address section requires a street address and says P.O. boxes are not acceptable. Rule 1450.150(a)(1) likewise requires a valid non-P.O.-box address of record and a valid email address.
When your name and contact details both change
Use the current name-change request and supporting proof for the name. If the change also affects your email, address or phone, handle that listed contact change within its 24-hour reporting period. Section 5-41 expressly lists contact and office-location changes; confirm any additional timing or filing required for your name-change circumstances with DRE.
What if the office, sponsor or managing broker changed?
Use the transaction for the change that actually occurred. The DRE Change of Designated Managing Broker Form, revised July 2024 concerns a licensed firm's or office's designated managing broker and lists a $35 transfer fee for that form. It explicitly directs ordinary sponsor changes, or a change from designated managing broker to sponsored licensee, to the Sponsor Card. That $35 is not a quoted universal fee for personal-information changes.
If sponsorship ends, Section 5-40(b) makes the license inactive immediately until valid new sponsorship is registered. An address-change confirmation does not bridge that gap. Read the active and inactive license guide before accepting another licensed task during a brokerage move.
A business name, ownership interest, office registration or assumed name can involve other requirements. Have the sponsoring broker identify the applicable business filing rather than using a personal name-change request to rename the firm.
What should you save and verify?

Verify the affected record through the agency account or its current lookup links, as appropriate. Do not assume every personal contact field appears in public lookup. If information still conflicts, follow up with DRE using the confirmation and accurate dates. Keep identity documents in the agency's official process, rather than placing them in a public profile or this site's feedback form.
Update the sponsoring brokerage's relevant personnel and compliance records too. For an exam applicant, reconcile the name with PSI and the ID you will present; changing IDFPR's record does not establish that PSI has changed its booking. The exam ID guide explains name matching.
Check email filtering as well as the address itself. Under Rule 1450.150(a)(3), the Division may serve documents by email under the cited laws, and service is deemed complete on transmission day even if the message lands in spam or junk. This is a service rule for those Department documents, not a statement that every school or PSI email has that effect.
Example: one move can need two updates
Eli changes his home address and later moves to another branch office. Editing the brokerage biography does not report either change to IDFPR. He must address his contact record, while the relevant office, sponsoring-broker and designated managing broker duties must also be identified and completed. A personal form receipt does not prove all those filings occurred.
Illinois license-information questions
How soon must I report a new address, email or phone number?
Section 5-41 and Rule 1450.150(a)(2) require an applicant or licensee to report address, email address, telephone and office-location changes within 24 hours after the change, through the required Department process. Updating the brokerage's own profile does not file the state update. Do not wait until renewal.
Can my address of record be a P.O. box?
Rule 1450.150(a)(1) requires a valid address that is not a post office box. The current personal-change form also says the updated mailing address must be a street address and rejects P.O. boxes. If you need a special address arrangement, ask DRE which address satisfies the applicable requirement; do not invent a substitute.
Which documents can support a name-change request?
The current form lists marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, naturalization document and driver's license among its name-change upload options. The agency's introductory guidance says acceptable support depends on the change requested. Follow the current form and any DRE instruction for your case rather than assuming any document proves every type of change.
Does a contact update transfer my sponsor or change the firm's managing broker?
No. Sponsorship registration and termination are separate from a personal contact edit. The firm's designated managing broker also has a distinct filing. The current DRE managing-broker-change form expressly directs ordinary sponsor changes to the Sponsor Card instead. A contact receipt does not establish active sponsorship.
