Treat a sponsor change as a legal status change
Changing brokerages is not complete when keys are returned or a new agreement is signed. The old sponsorship must end, the required notices must be made, the license becomes inactive, and the new sponsorship must be properly established before licensed work resumes.

Direct answer: For an initial broker applicant, the sponsoring broker may establish sponsorship after receiving the passing exam score report, and the sponsor and applicant must complete the current IDFPR submissions within 24 hours. For a licensed broker leaving a sponsor, the terminating party has immediate notice and 24-hour IDFPR duties under Section 1450.115. Termination automatically changes the license to inactive status. The broker may not perform licensed activity until a valid new sponsorship is established. Section 1450.130 currently lists a $35 sponsorship-transfer processing fee. Verify the IDFPR record and both brokers' written instructions rather than assuming the change is instantaneous.

The sponsor receives the passing examination report, establishes the written employment or independent-contractor relationship, and notifies the Division in its required format within 24 hours. The applicant submits the applicable transcript, pass report, signed broker application and required documents, and application fee within the rule's process.
Confirm which party uploads each item, when the fee is paid, and what status permits onboarding to become practice. A company email address or public profile should not go live before lawful authority.

Plan a transfer before giving notice
Read the current agreement for notice, pending commissions, listings, buyer and tenant relationships, files, database access, equipment, expenses, and post-termination obligations. Client agreements belong within the sponsoring-broker structure, and transaction records cannot be copied or moved merely because the individual originated the relationship.
Interview and negotiate with the prospective sponsor, but avoid sharing confidential client or brokerage information. Set a transition plan that recognizes there may be a lawful no-practice gap.

Stop activity during the inactive interval
Once sponsorship terminates, the license automatically becomes inactive. Do not show property, negotiate, solicit clients, advertise licensed services, draft or present brokerage documents, or otherwise act as a broker while waiting for the new registration. Route transaction and consumer communications according to the former sponsor's lawful instructions.
Remove or pause personal advertising that implies active authority, including websites, portals, social profiles, email signatures, signs, and team pages. The new sponsor should approve compliant advertising before republication.
Verify the change from both sides
Confirm termination with the old sponsor, the new sponsor's submission, payment of the current $35 transfer processing fee, and the IDFPR public status. Resolve duplicate sponsorship, missing termination, name mismatch, or incorrect firm records before working.
Keep a transfer file with both agreements, notices, receipts, status captures, advertising takedowns, and written instructions for pending transactions and compensation. That record protects against the dangerous assumption that someone else handled it.
Example: Friday resignation, Monday open house
Situation: Alex resigns from Brokerage A on Friday, signs with Brokerage B that afternoon, and has a Sunday open house scheduled for a former client. Brokerage B says its administrator will process the transfer Monday.
Best response: Alex's license becomes inactive when the old sponsorship terminates and cannot be used for the Sunday activity. Signing with Brokerage B does not create valid registered sponsorship by itself. The client and open house must be handled through lawful broker instructions, and Alex should resume licensed activity only after the new status is valid and confirmed.
